Hormonal imbalances in both men and women can disrupt sleep. While women undergo hormonal shifts throughout their lifetime, it is now known that men undergo a similar shift, referred to as andropause or “male menopause.” In both cases, primary sex hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone in women and testosterone in men, shift and decline, resulting in a host of emotional, psychological, and physical changes. Sleep is often disrupted during these transitions. As these hormonal shifts are taking place, it is common for melatonin levels to also drop.
