Bed-wetting is a common occurrence in toddlers and is only recognized as a disorder after the age of five. It is estimated that 3% of youths between the ages of 12 and 18 suffer from chronic sleep enuresis. This uncontrollable loss of bladder control during the night happens in all sleep stages and is believed to be hereditary; less than 1% of sleep enuresis is attributed to emotional problems. Physiological abnormalities and disorders, including a small bladder, metabolic or hormonal imbalances, allergies, bladder infections, and obstructive sleep apnea are associated with the development of this disorder.
